Open Mic Night, Chef-Style Sunday, Jan. 27 and Monday, Feb. 11.

Open Mic Night, Chef-Style Sunday, Jan. 27 and Monday, Feb. 11.

Foodies and chefs tell stories of their favorite suppers. And more.

By Alysia Gray Painter

If you’ve lived in Los Angeles, or any city for any length of time, you’ve likely been to something like an open mic night, or something resembling that.

Gotta give anyone who gets up at a mic props, of course, regardless of how successful they are. It isn’t easy to tell jokes cold, or a hilariously painful story from junior high. It can sometimes be challenging to connect to the story being told.

What is easy to connect with, though? Stories of food. Stories of eating something lovely and special. Stories of a nice meal with friends. That’s a common experience for many people, and even if the storyteller is talking oysters and you don’t eat seafood, you can see the supper they describe.

Meanwhile, Back at Cafe du Monde, the traveling talk-about-food show (and now book) is all about short food tales told by chefs and other food professionals. Call it a very focused, very flavorful spin on open mic night. And, we should add, the speakers, who all will be speaking for 5 or so minutes, are all invited up to the mic.

The oldest Irish establishment in Los Angeles, Tom Bergin’s was founded in 1936 by Tom Bergin, a former lawyer turned publican. Since 1949, Tom Bergin’s Tavern has occupied a quaint Irish style cottage on Fairfax, and over the decades has been one of LA’s most popular watering holes. Known for the distinctive Horse Shoe bar, the inspiration behind the bar used in the celebrated sitcom Cheers, Tom Bergin’s is renowned not only for its Irish Coffee, but also for its camaraderie and warm neighborhood feel. In 1973, the tavern was sold to T.K. Vodrey, who kept the Bergin tradition alive and thriving. Today, Warner Ebbink and Brandon Boudet, known for their skill in revitalizing old school restaurants, have acquired the celebrated Irish tavern and have restored the iconic bar, cathedral-like ceilings and paneled wooden decor, while still maintaining the integrity of the historic institution. “Meanwhile, Back at Cafe du Monde…” straddles both LAs

Meanwhile Back at Cafe du Monde on Bites and Booze Radio Show

Sometimes the ExperienceLA blog becomes ExperienceLouisiana when there is a Los Angeles connection, and “Meanwhile, Back at Cafe du Monde…” straddles both LAs. Producer and creative director Peggy Sweeney-McDonald is from Louisiana and lives in Los Angeles. On Wednesday she taped a talk radio show with Jay Ducote for radio and Internet broadcast on the Bites and Booze show for Saturday 3 pm west coast time to discuss the upcoming performance of Meanwhile Back at Cafe du Monde… at Boutin’s in Baton Rouge that features a local cast of chefs and personalties connecting with food.

Also in the broadcast booth and on part of the Baton Rouge cast was General Russel Honore who played such a pivotal role during Katrina coordinating military relief efforts. Calling into the show was Paul Arigo, CEO for Baton Rouge Convention and Visitors Bureau., who is also part of the Baton Rouge cast. I was in the broadcast booth taking pictures.

Regardless of where one lives, you can listen to Jay, Peggy, Russel, and Paul on  Baton Rouge 107.3 Talk on the Internet or the Tunein Radio application for Apple and Android mobile devices to hear this entertaining broadcast promoting this ultimate performance art food show.  The broadcast  is also availlable from iTunes as a podcast if you miss this during its regualr Saturday afternon time slot.

Meanwhile Back at Cafe du Monde performances are now over 30 with several Los angeles performances  in Santa Monica and in Hollywood. For those who are reading this in Louisiana and missed the New Orleans performance last weekend, then call Boutin’s to make your reservation for Sunday October 16. For $35 one will get the great Cajun cooking of Boutin’s and the food/performance that begins at 5:30 pm. For this performance, Jay Ducote who recently made Fox’s Master Chef Top 100 serves as master of ceremonies being responsible to keep the evening moving along. as the cast features many notable Baton Rouge local chefs and food personalities.

When I started the ExperienceLA project my definition of culture in Los Angeles included food (which then was considered unusual) and has been part of the project since the 2003 launch date. However in Louisina the culture revolves around food. Thus with food being the universal language, Peggy developed the entire concept of this performance art with permission to connect around Cafe du Monde a food destination known around the world. So catch the Bites and Booze show to whet your appetitie for the Boutin’s show on Sunday  or back in Los Angeles sometime in the future. I think I am ready for some beignets now.
