Life in the A-Zone

Podcast • Memoir • Journey of Love, Hope and Caregiving

LIFE IN THE A-ZONE is a deeply personal journey through love, life, loss, and the unspoken heartbreak of caregiving for a parent with Alzheimer’s.

Through raw, vulnerable stories, humor, and the warmth of big Southern family life, Peggy Sweeney-McDonald shines a light on the family caregiver—the tears, the exhaustion, and the pink cloud moments of joy and hope that carry you through what she calls “the A-Zone.”

This book is for every caregiver who has trudged through that fog, and for anyone who has ever loved someone through a life-threatening illness. It’s a reminder that love—no matter what—is enough.

Reviews of Life in the A-Zone

“For those of us entering the Care Zone where we become the parents of our parents, Peggy Sweeney-McDonald’s Life in the A-Zone (“A” meaning Alzheimer’s) couldn’t come at a better time. In some ways, I wish I didn’t know what was ahead—but for parents with cognitive issues, it is best that the kids know as soon as possible. The changes are coming whether you’re ready or not, and no one braces you for it. Except Peggy. Her book reads like a diary, the daily step-by-step as dementia began eroding her mother’s life. Yes, it is heartbreaking, but as we assume the caretaking role, knowing what to expect is far better than being surprised.”

A Note From Peggy

Life in the A-Zone began as a way to make sense of the most tender, heartbreaking, and transformative season of my life—caring for my mother during her Alzheimer’s journey.

I started writing these stories to hold on to the moments that were slipping away—the ones that taught me grace, patience, laughter, and what I now call “pink cloud moments”—those unexpected glimmers of love and meaning that appear even in the hardest days.

During COVID-19, I began podcasting these stories from a walk-in closet, processing my grief by speaking honestly about what was on my heart—the struggle, the sorrow, the unexpected joy, and the memories of when my mother was healthy and vibrant.

What I discovered was connection. Caregivers wrote to tell me they felt seen. Readers who had lost someone shared that the stories helped them remember with tenderness instead of pain. Over time, those voices encouraged me to gather these moments into the memoir you now hold.

My hope is that this book offers companionship on your journey—whether you are caregiving, grieving, or simply navigating the beautiful, complicated landscape of family.

Thank you for letting me share my mother, my family, and this chapter of my life with you.
